Next-Gen Nuclear Reactors Are Coming to the US, Wright Says

The Trump administration’s top energy official has emphasized the importance of strengthening the United States' strategic uranium reserves to reduce dependence on Russian supplies and bolster confidence in the future of nuclear power.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright highlighted plans to advance nuclear energy as the demand for power increases alongside the electrification of the economy. Currently, Russia supplies approximately 25% of the enriched uranium utilized by the US’s 94 nuclear reactors, which contribute around 20% of the nation's electricity.

A sudden halt in Russian uranium imports could threaten roughly 5% of the country’s electricity supply if no alternative sources or stockpiles are in place, underscoring the need for securing and expanding domestic uranium reserves.
