Waymo and Lyft Partner to Launch Robotaxi Service in Nashville by 2026
===========================================================================
Waymo has announced a strategic partnership with ride-hailing giant Lyft to introduce a robotaxi service in Nashville scheduled for 2026. The company revealed that it will begin testing its fleet of all-electric, autonomous Jaguar I-Pace vehicles in Nashville within the coming months and plans to open the service to the public next year.
Expansion of Robotaxi Operations -------------------------------
This partnership marks an expansion of Waymo’s autonomous vehicle services beyond its initial launch in Phoenix, extending to other major cities including Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Future plans also include deploying robotaxi services in Miami, Washington D.C., Dallas, and Denver.
Shift Towards Autonomous Vehicle Technology Provider -----------------------------------------------------
The deal underscores Waymo’s evolving role from being solely an operator of autonomous vehicles to becoming a technology provider. Earlier this year, Waymo launched robotaxi services in partnership with Uber in Atlanta and Austin. In these collaborations, Waymo handles vehicle testing, roadside assistance, and core rider support, while Uber manages fleet operations like cleaning, maintenance, inspections, charging, and depot management through its subsidiary, Moove Cars.
Lyft's Role in Nashville ------------------------
Similar to the Uber arrangement, Lyft will manage fleet services in Nashville, including vehicle readiness, maintenance, infrastructure, and depot operations through its wholly owned subsidiary, Flexdrive. Lyft also announced plans to invest in a dedicated autonomous vehicle facility to support this fleet.
Unique Access for Nashville Customers --------------------------------------
A key difference in the Nashville partnership is the way customers will access robotaxis. Initially, riders will hail autonomous vehicles directly via the Waymo app. As the service expands, Waymo plans to also dispatch vehicles through the Lyft app for matched rides.
This contrasts with the Uber partnerships in Atlanta and Austin, where users are required to book rides exclusively through the Uber app, hoping to be matched with a robotaxi rather than a human driver.
Background and Past Collaborations ----------------------------------
Lyft and Waymo previously collaborated in 2019, when Waymo integrated a fleet of autonomous vehicles into Lyft’s ride-hailing network in Phoenix, as part of its early efforts to scale up commercial robotaxi services.
