Meta Enhances Horizon Worlds with New Game Engine and Creator Tools
Meta is upgrading its social VR platform Horizon Worlds, which resembles Roblox, by introducing a new game engine that boasts improved graphics and performance. Alongside this, Meta has launched Horizon Studio, an editor designed to help creators develop custom in-game experiences.
Meta Horizon Studio: A Creator's Playground
Horizon Studio is a robust editing tool enabling users to craft detailed VR worlds. Existing features include generative AI capabilities that assist in producing textures and audio. Looking ahead, Meta plans to integrate an AI assistant into the editor later this year, streamlining the development process. During a demo at Connect 2025, a developer interacted with an AI chatbot, requesting modifications such as new environments and adjustments to non-player characters' (NPCs) personalities.
The Power Behind the Worlds: Horizon Engine
The backbone of these enhanced VR environments is the Horizon Engine, which delivers better graphics, faster performance, and increased concurrency to support more complex and scalable worlds.
Growing the Creator Community
Despite expanding from VR to mobile platforms, Horizon Worlds hasn't yet gained widespread popularity. To foster a vibrant creator ecosystem, Meta launched a $50 million creators fund earlier this year, aiming to attract more content creators to build for the metaverse.
