iFixit Disassembles the iPhone Air MagSafe Battery Pack and Reveals Possible Shared Battery Components
Today, iFixit took apart the new iPhone Air MagSafe Battery pack, an accessory designed exclusively for the iPhone Air, uncovering intriguing insights about its internal components.
Unusual Battery Shape Suggests Shared Components
Upon inspection, iFixit observed that the battery within the MagSafe Battery pack has an unconventional shape. This led them to speculate that Apple may be using the same battery for both the iPhone Air and its MagSafe Battery accessory. Comparing the battery in the pack with the one showcased during the iPhone Air announcement, they found a close match—if not identical.
Battery Specifications and Design
The battery boasts a capacity of 12.26Wh and measures just 2.72mm in thickness, making it slim enough to fit inside the 5.6mm thick iPhone Air. Despite sharing the same battery, the MagSafe pack can only charge the iPhone Air to about 65%. This limited charging efficiency is attributed to energy transfer losses during wireless charging.
The MagSafe Battery pack itself is slightly thicker than the iPhone Air, with iFixit suggesting that this dimension is minimized to ensure device viability. The battery is protected by plastic and lacks the titanium frame present in the iPhone Air.
Additional Observations
- The internal battery is protected with plastic, not titanium.
- The size of the battery suggests it was designed to be as compact as possible while still functional for a portable accessory.
- Despite using the same battery as the iPhone, the device's design limits its ability to fully charge the phone efficiently.
