Apple Launches New Initiative to Protect and Restore California Redwoods
Apple Invests in Conservation Through the Restore Fund
Since 2021, Apple has been actively investing in conservation and regenerative agriculture projects across six continents through its innovative Restore Fund. As part of this effort, the company has committed to protecting 14,000 acres of coastal redwood forest in California in partnership with The Conservation Fund.
Protecting California’s Iconic Coastal Redwoods
Apple recently announced a new investment aimed at the sustainable management and restoration of the Gualala River Forest in Mendocino County, California. This project underscores Apple's broader commitment to environmental sustainability, leveraging the Restore Fund initiative to support biodiversity, local economies, and carbon removal efforts.
> _“Forests are a powerful technology for removing carbon from the atmosphere,”_ said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s VP of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives. _“Our investments in nature support ecosystems and communities worldwide.”_
The Role of Redwoods in Climate Action
California’s coastal redwoods, the tallest trees on Earth, play a significant role in carbon sequestration, absorbing and storing vast amounts of CO₂ as they grow. Apple’s investment will fund long-term conservation and sustainable management practices in the Gualala River Forest, which is also home to species like sugar pines and California black oaks.
Growing the Restore Fund for Global Impact
Launched in 2021 with Goldman Sachs and Conservation International, the Restore Fund has expanded significantly, adding a new managed fund in 2023 and more direct investments in 2025, including contributions from Apple's suppliers such as TSMC and Murata.
This initiative supports Apple's goal to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire footprint by 2030 — aiming to cut global emissions by 75% from 2015 levels and offset remaining emissions through high-quality carbon credits, particularly those supporting nature-based solutions.
Safeguarding U.S. Forests
The Gualala River Forest project exemplifies Apple’s commitment to preserving U.S. forests. Managed by The Conservation Fund, this partnership focuses on biodiversity preservation and sustainable forestry practices, safeguarding the habitat of hundreds of species and the livelihoods of local communities.
> _“America’s forests are under threat, with millions at risk of disappearing by 2050,”_ said Larry Selzer, President and CEO of The Conservation Fund. _“Our collaboration with Apple serves as a model for protecting working forests across the country.”_
Monitoring and Ensuring Forest Health
The Conservation Fund monitors the forest by measuring tree diameter and height, tracking carbon storage over time. This partnership with Apple has previously protected over 36,000 acres of forestland in the U.S., and similar efforts are underway globally, including a temperate rainforest in Washington State.
Global Conservation and Community Support
Beyond the U.S., Apple’s conservation efforts span the globe, supporting projects in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. Projects include restoring mangrove forests in India, supporting the Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots program, and leveraging remote sensing tools for verifying climate solutions.
Committing to a Sustainable Future
Apple’s ongoing investments in conservation and sustainable management highlight its dedication to combatting climate change. Through the Restore Fund and grants to local communities, the company continues to support innovative approaches to carbon sequestration, supporting both environmental health and social well-being worldwide.
