Apple OLED Roadmap: iPad minis, iPads, and MacBooks Target OLED Displays in Coming Years
Bloomberg reports that Apple is developing OLED versions for the iPad mini, iPad Air, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air, expanding on the OLED used in the iPad Pro. The company’s plan envisions OLED across multiple devices in the months and years ahead, with some timing details contingent on the product.
- iPad mini: OLED is expected as soon as 2026, with a possible bonus upgrade in water resistance.
- iPad Air: Not in 2026; the next spring model will continue with LCD. OLED is planned later, most likely no earlier than 2027.
The iPad Pro already uses OLED, and Apple does not currently plan to bring OLED to the low-cost iPad line.
- MacBook Pro: An OLED display is anticipated when the next update arrives, potentially as soon as 2026. After introducing OLED to the Pro, Apple would bring OLED to the MacBook Air. Early work on an OLED MacBook Air has begun, but a launch is unlikely before 2028 at the earliest.
- MacBook Air: The spring 2026 model is expected to continue with LCD. OLED for the Air is planned after the Pro, with 2028 at the earliest for a launch.
Bottom line: Apple’s OLED strategy appears to target a broader OLED rollout across iPads (including iPad mini and iPad Air eventually) and the MacBook line, while the budget iPad remains on LCD for the foreseeable future.
