Analogue 3D firmware update adds support for Nintendo’s modern N64 controller
Analogue’s 3D handheld, which debuted late last year with four front ports for original wired N64 controllers, just received a firmware update that adds compatibility with Nintendo’s newer wireless N64 pad. For players who wanted a wireless experience that stays faithful to the original layout, this update is a welcome addition.
Previously, if you wanted wireless play, your best bet was 8BitDo’s 64 controller, which mirrors the button and stick arrangement of the N64’s classic pads but sports a modern design. Nintendo later released an official wireless N64 controller (announced in 2021 alongside Switch Online N64 games), though it commands a higher price and requires an active Switch Online subscription. If you’re aiming for a more authentic wireless setup without subscribing to Nintendo’s service, the most direct path was using 8BitDo’s Mod Kit to convert wired controllers into wireless ones.
The Analogue 3D version 1.2.0 firmware is available for download from Analogue’s site. Installation can be done by copying the update to the console’s memory card or by connecting the 3D to a PC with a USB-C cable. In addition to controller compatibility, the update includes several bug fixes and usability improvements such as better compatibility with certain 4K displays and audio clipping issues.
Other quality-of-life changes include the Analogue Library now remembering when a game is added to your collection and tracking total playtime for each title.
