Apple documents a “technical failure” in Australia that could affect some older iPhones’ emergency calls
Apple published a support document on Friday describing a network-related fault in Australia that prevented certain older iPhones from dialing the emergency number 000, even when an alternate network was available. The company says the odds of a recurrence are low, but the issue could reappear under the same exceptional network conditions.
In the document, Apple notes: if the rare circumstances affecting mobile operators’ networks recur, some older devices may still struggle to reach emergency services through an alternative network. The company adds that operators are taking steps to reduce the risk of future problems.
For iPhone 12 users, Apple mentions that the iOS 26.2 update released recently “provides support for this scenario.” Apple also states that iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone 11, and all iPhone models from iPhone 13 onward are not affected. If any earlier models are found to be impacted, customers will receive additional guidance from their mobile operator.
To update an iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update.
