OpenAI is prioritizing the accuracy of its age-prediction technology before rolling out an “adult mode” in ChatGPT, with a targeted debut in early 2026. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, said during a briefing on GPT-5.2 that the feature should arrive in the first quarter of 2026, contingent on getting age estimation right.

The company is currently testing an age-prediction model designed to determine when safeguards should apply to users under 18. Simo noted that testing is taking place in certain countries to gauge whether the system can reliably identify teens without misidentifying adults, a crucial accuracy criterion before any adult-related features are released.

This effort comes as many online services have rolled out stricter age-verification technologies to comply with new laws. The Verge reported on this development, highlighting OpenAI’s emphasis on getting the model right before introducing adult features.
