Following the news that Terminator Zero was dropped by Netflix, showrunner Mattson Tomlin has explained why he opted not to wrap the story up with a quick mini-season. The animated series, which premiered on Netflix in August 2024, was met with widespread critical acclaim and even earned a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes at launch. It steered the Terminator saga in a fresh direction, addressed a long-standing weakness in the franchise, and concluded with high-octane action while leaving doors open for future installments.

Tomlin revealed he had a five-season arc in mind for Terminator Zero, but he confirmed what many fans had suspected: the anime has been canceled. In response to a fan inquiry on X (formerly Twitter) about an official status update, Tomlin stated plainly, “It was cancelled.” He acknowledged the reception was tremendous, but ultimately “not nearly enough people watched it. I would’ve love[d] to deliver on the Future War I had planned in Season’s 2 and 3, but I’m also very happy with how it feels contained as is.”

He hinted at future threads about the full five-season plan, noting that he had written most of Season 2 scripts and outlines for Season 3. The series finale, he explained, was special and part of what helped him land the job in the first place.

Tomlin also touched on the decision not to wrap things up with two or three extra episodes. He said, “They offered to let me do two, maybe three episodes more to wrap up the story, which I declined. I felt the story I wanted to tell was much longer, and the finale of Season 1 actually left things in a good place.”

Despite the cancellation, Tomlin described his collaboration with Netflix as largely positive, praising the streamer for its support and creative freedom. “Netflix was really great about supporting the show and giving me tremendous creative freedom to do what I wanted to do. Good partners,” he said. He also stressed the financial reality: the show was expensive and time-consuming, and the network could only justify continuing if the audience numbers rose — which, alas, they did not.

For fans seeking more corner-cutting-edge sci-fi fare, the article nods to other futuristic offerings, including a look at the best sci-fi movies and a reminder that even Terminator creator James Cameron remains wary of how close humanity sits to an apocalypse.
