Apple reportedly stockpiling components for its first foldable iPhone ahead of 2026 launch
A Weibo leaker with purported access to Apple’s supply chain, Fixed Focus Digital, claims Apple is building up inventory for a long-rumored foldable iPhone, tentatively dubbed the iPhone Fold, in advance of a 2026 debut. The account did not provide specifics, but the report suggests Apple is securing key parts such as foldable OLED panels, a titanium frame, and intricate hinge assemblies that may combine several materials.
The stockpiling is framed as part of the pre-production phase, where suppliers begin increasing output to mitigate risk as mass production approaches. Some foldable components come with long lead times and higher failure rates, so early procurement could help smooth the eventual launch supply chain.
Apple’s foldable iPhone is expected to resemble Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold in its book-style folding mechanism rather than the clamshell design of the Galaxy Z Flip.
When folded, the device would present a 5.5-inch outer display similar in scale to a standard iPhone screen. Unfolded, it would reveal a 7.8-inch iPad-style inner display with sources describing a nearly crease-free panel and the possibility of an under-screen camera. The outer screen is said to house a punch-hole camera, and authentication could be handled by Touch ID integrated into the side button rather than Face ID. A dual-lens rear camera is also anticipated.
Experts have offered opinions on the frame materials. Jeff Pu has said the frame could be a titanium-aluminum mix, while Ming-Chi Kuo has pointed to multiple materials, including titanium and stainless steel, with some hinge components possibly using Liquidmetal to boost durability.
The foldable iPhone is rumored to be as thin as 4.5mm when opened, a design choice that would push the use of titanium to prevent bending. With the kinds of display and mechanical engineering challenges Apple faces, the company’s manufacturing groundwork suggests the iPhone Fold could finally be nearing reality. If plans hold, it would be positioned as part of the iPhone 18 lineup, with a target launch in September 2026.
