Wyatt Russell's Vision for John Walker: The Raft, a Bucky Buddy Cop, and Thunderbolts 2
In a recent interview, Wyatt Russell shared his ideas for John Walker’s next chapters in the MCU, including a potential comedic team-up with Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes and a future role at the superhero prison The Raft. Russell debuted as John Walker (Captain America/U.S. Agent) in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and continued the character’s arc into Thunderbolts, with fans watching his progress into the broader Marvel lineup.
Walker is expected to pop up again alongside a sprawling cast of heroes and villains in the upcoming Avengers entry, Doomsday, set for release on December 18, 2026. As we chatted about Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, we also asked about the possibility of Thunderbolts 2 and how Walker might be used after the Avengers era.
A comics-inspired arc for John Walker Russell teased a storyline straight out of the source material: Walker could lose an arm, end up in a wheelchair, and serve as the warden of The Raft—the federal prison that houses powered individuals. Such a turn would keep the character within the Marvel universe, albeit in an office-bound capacity.
A possible Bucky Barnes team-up Beyond the prison narrative, Russell expressed a desire to see Walker partner with Bucky Barnes on screen. “I’d love to do a buddy-cop movie with Sebastian in the Marvel universe,” he said, praising Stan and the rest of the cast for their work. He added that the projects he’s been part of are something he’s proud of and would gladly revisit.
Thunderbolts 2: the cast wants more Regarding a Thunderbolts sequel or a new Avengers-era team-up, Russell indicated that the ensemble is eager to continue telling that story. The group would consider returning for a Thunderbolts movie if the project is right and affordable. He credited director Jake Schreier for caring deeply about delivering a quality film and noted the team’s fond memories of filming the first installment. He also hinted that Schreier’s move to X-Men is a separate project, but the willingness to reprise the Thunderbolts is very much alive.
