Marshals, the Yellowstone spin-off centered on Kayce Dutton’s new life as a U.S. marshal, kicks off with a shocking turn. In the premiere, Monica Dutton’s fate is revealed in a way that sets the tone for the new series: she dies, and her death is tied to cancer caused by toxins dumped on the Broken Rock reservation. The choice gives the show an avenue to tackle a real-world issue while continuing Kayce’s story with his family in mind.

Showrunner Spencer Hednut explained that honoring Monica while shining a light on a serious reservation-related problem was a priority. He emphasized that Monica’s presence remains a guiding force for Kayce, even though she is no longer alive, and that her memory will influence the course of the series.

Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce, admitted he didn’t see Monica’s death coming. He said he was disappointed to lose a close co-star and friend in Kelsey Asbille, noting that Kayce and Monica have long felt like the same person in his eyes. Still, Grimes acknowledged that Monica’s death creates a substantial narrative engine for the new show.

Fans react to Monica’s death have been mixed. On Reddit and other forums, some viewers argued that the timing and nature of her passing felt heavy-handed, with questions about whether Kayce has endured enough loss already. Others felt the premiere didn’t live up to expectations, framing Marshals as a CBS procedural wearing Yellowstone’s skin. A few supporters defended the premiere, arguing the pilot delivered solid momentum and that initial reactions shouldn’t color the entire series.

Marshals continues next Sunday (March 8) on CBS. If you’re deciding what to watch this month, check out our picks for standout new shows.
