Fortnite Returns to Google Play as Court-Driven Settlement Moves Forward
Five years after it was pulled from Android devices, Fortnite has returned to the Google Play Store for US users, signaling a partial revival of Epic Games’ popular title on Google’s platform. The rollback comes five years after Epic challenged the policies of both Apple and Google, which previously forced Android players to sideload the game rather than download it from the official store.
The comeback in Google’s store is currently limited to the United States, with no immediate details about when Fortnite will be available outside the U.S. The game’s writers and Epic have not provided a broad release timetable, indicating to players to “stay tuned” for future updates.
In public statements on social media, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney thanked Google for its cooperation, while Google’s top Android executives, Rick Osterloh and Sameer Samat, replied with congratulatory messages, signaling a friendlier tone between the firms after years of legal sparring.
This maneuver follows a recent court directive. Judge James Donato ordered Epic and Google to submit an update by December 19 on how Google is fulfilling the injunction, and he scheduled an evidentiary hearing for January 22 to review the settlement proposed by the two companies.
The developments form a part of the ongoing Epic Games vs. Google case over app-store practices and related antitrust concerns, with the parties continuing to negotiate while the court monitors compliance.
