Seth MacFarlane Explains Why Each Family Guy Episode Can Take Up to a Year to Produce
After more than a quarter-century on air, Family Guy’s production pace isn’t as quick as it might seem. Creator Seth MacFarlane notes that each installment typically requires roughly ten to twelve months to finish.
MacFarlane is currently promoting the second season of his comedy prequel Ted, which lands on Peacock with eight new episodes. Meanwhile, Family Guy is in its 24th season, having recently hit the 450-episode milestone, which has him reflecting on how the show is actually put together.
During a recent appearance on Pardon My Take, MacFarlane was asked about the time needed to produce a standard 22-minute animated episode. His answer: the process usually spans about ten to twelve months for each episode.
The hosts reacted with surprise, prompting Sollenberger to remark that it isn’t as simple as “you’ve already got the characters, so you can just move them around.” MacFarlane explained that animation is built frame by frame, unlike live action where a performer’s expression is captured in real time.
“The tone of a scene matters,” he said. “Are we pleading or is it dismissive? Those distinctions require careful planning.” Each variation must be laid out and timed on what animation folks call an exposure sheet, which dictates how many frames separate different beats.
