Kevin Williamson has confirmed he won’t be directing Scream 8 after helming Scream 7, and he’s offered a candid, if tempered, outlook on the prospects for the next chapter in the franchise. Scream 7 centers on Sidney Prescott, now defending her daughter Tatum from a new Ghostface who claims to be Stu Macher. This killer also toys with the Prescott family using AI in a brutal reign of terror.

Despite mixed notices from critics—Scream 7 landed around 31% on Rotten Tomatoes—the film still drew solid box office, surpassing $151 million worldwide. Ghostface’s staying power continues to outpace the negative reviews, at least financially.

Williamson, who has produced every film in the series and written four, says he won’t direct Scream 8 and notes that the project isn’t shaping up as a priority at the moment. “No one is talking about Scream 8 yet,” he explained, adding that he does have ideas for where the story could go but is eager to see what another storyteller could bring to the table. He stressed that being part of the Scream family doesn’t require him to always write or direct; others can take the reins.

That said, Williamson did hint there could still be a future for Scream 8. He said he’s hopeful there will be an eighth film, even if conversations aren’t active right now. In February, though, he and Neve Campbell had already discussed a potential Scream 8 while filming the 2026 project, sharing on-set brainstorms about possible directions for the series. “When you’re sitting on the set at three in the morning, you’re like, ‘Well, what would Scream 8 be about?’ And you just start spit-balling,” he told Deadline. Campbell echoed a similar spirit, noting she’d welcome fans’ ideas and even floated Gale Weathers as a suspect in the next installment.

For now, fans will have to wait to see if Ghostface returns for Scream 8. In the meantime, you can browse ahead to lists like our most anticipated movies of 2026 and our roundup of the best films of 2025.
