Dune: Part Three Teased as Denis Villeneuve Maps the Messiah Era
Timothée Chalamet has offered a first glimpse of Dune: Part Three, the concluding chapter of Denis Villeneuve’s epic sci‑fi trilogy. The film is slated for a December 18 release, pitting it against Avengers: Doomsday, with the actor once again sharing the initial look via an Instagram Story.
Recapping Part Two, Chalamet returned as Paul Atreides, the heir who embraces his destiny on the unforgiving dunes of Arrakis. Joined by his mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), Paul allies with the Fremen, falls for Chani (Zendaya), and fights to free his people from the encroaching Harkonnen regime. The finale sees Paul topple the antagonists and set in motion a crusade across the Great Houses with a Fremen army at his back.
The sequel also introduced new faces: Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, and Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot of the Bene Gesserit. Villeneuve has repeatedly indicated that Part Three would enlarge the roles for Pugh, Seydoux, and Anya-Taylor Joy (adult Alia), all of whom had brief appearances in Part Two. Returning players include Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck and Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, with Robert Pattinson reportedly cast as the villain Scytale.
Legendary Pictures confirmed in August 2024 that a third Dune film is in development, with Villeneuve back behind the camera. The project is expected to adapt Frank Herbert’s second novel, Dune Messiah, advancing the overarching saga beyond the events of Part Two.
Dune: Part Two collected two Oscars from five nominations and grossed over $714 million worldwide. Even before its release, Villeneuve had teased work on a potential third installment, noting a “dream” of bringing Dune Messiah to the screen. Zimmer has also signaled his involvement for Part Three, telling Variety in 2024 that he was already drafting music while Dune II was in production.
In Zimmer’s own words, the creative process for the third film was already taking shape: Denis Villeneuve would arrive early on set, pull up a copy of Dune Messiah, and chart a path forward. Zimmer emphasized that the story momentum wouldn’t end with Part Two, promising a continued journey through Herbert’s universe.
Anticipation is running high as fans await the arrival of Dune: Part Three, which promises to bring Villeneuve’s desert epic to a fitting and expansive close, charting Paul Atreides’s ascension or fall across a galaxy-spanning conflict.
