Elijah Wood Reflects on Hobbit Trauma Ahead of The Hunt for Gollum Sequel
Production on The Hunt for Gollum, the belated Lord of the Rings continuation, is moving forward with Andy Serkis directing a script from Phillipa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, Arty Papageorgiou, and Fran Walsh.
Ian McKellen has confirmed a return as Gandalf and revealed that Frodo will also be part of the story. Elijah Wood has stopped short of confirming his involvement but hinted at a reunion, telling The Times that “there is a genuine feeling of getting the band back together.”
The remarks came as Wood promoted Ready or Not 2, and a few LotR questions found their way into the conversation about the new project.
Wood on the Hobbits’ Trauma
Wood addressed the notion that the Hobbits would carry deep scars back to the Shire, saying, “The Hobbits, based on the experience that they’ve all had, they carry a lot of trauma, for sure, of like everything they’ve been through together.” He also argued that Return of the King captured that sense of lasting change, pointing to the pub scene at the film’s end as an accurate reflection of how the characters would be if they ever returned to more ordinary life.
A Little Fight Might Be Fun Wood also mused about Frodo’s potential in the new story, suggesting it could be entertaining to see him in a skirmish. He noted Frodo doesn’t do much fighting in the original trilogy and speculated there could be a moment of action—perhaps echoing a scene reminiscent of Weathertop—followed by a quick return to Frodo’s more restrained role.
