Mel Schilling, longtime MAFS expert, dies at 54 after cancer battle
Reality TV veteran Mel Schilling has died at the age of 54 following a battle with cancer. Her husband, Gareth, announced the news on Instagram, describing Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling as having passed away peacefully, surrounded by those who loved her.
In his tribute, Gareth shared that in Mel’s final moments she whispered a message for their daughter Maddie that would stay with him for the rest of his life. He said the gesture encapsulated Mel’s spirit: always thinking of others, even at the end.
Mel was celebrated not only as a beloved host and commentator on Married at First Sight but also for becoming a new mother and a TV star at the age of 42, excelling in both roles. Gareth highlighted the strength she showed during two years of chemotherapy, noting that she never complained, remained brave, and never let her illness stop her from filming.
To many, Mel was the matriarch of MAFS and a queen of reality TV. To Maddie and Gareth, she was “our wee Melsie”—an extraordinary mum, a role model, and a soulmate. Gareth additionally thanked the show’s close-knit community—John, Alessandra, Charlene, Roxy, and Sophie—for their kindness and support.
He reflected on life’s beauty and its cruelty, emphasizing that tomorrow is never guaranteed. He urged others to honor Mel by living life to the fullest, loving deeply, and not sweating the small stuff. He concluded with a heartfelt farewell: after 15 wonderful years by his soulmate’s side, he would forever be grateful, saying goodbye until they meet again.
