Google Gemini will power Apple Foundation Models and a more personalized Siri
Apple is tapping Google’s Gemini infrastructure to underpin its next generation of AI-powered features, including a more tailored Siri set to debut this year. In a joint statement, Apple and Google said the partnership will leverage Gemini and Google Cloud for future Apple Foundation Models, while keeping Apple Intelligence running primarily on Apple devices with Private Cloud Compute support.
This collaboration marks a multi-year effort to bring advanced AI capabilities into Apple’s ecosystem, with Apple promising a more personalized assistant experience that still respects on-device processing. Apple has been quietly advancing an AI-enhanced Siri for months, after delaying the rollout to refine performance and context awareness.
Bloomberg reports that Apple weighed a bespoke Gemini variant for Siri-powered tasks, including a “World Knowledge Answers” feature that would fetch information from the web and present AI-generated summaries. Earlier this year, Google released its Gemini 3 model, which has topped AI leaderboards in various benchmarks.
Apple has also reorganized its AI leadership, moving Vision Pro chief Mike Rockwell into the role previously held by AI chief John Giannandrea, who stepped down late last year. In addition to the Google deal, Apple has explored collaborations with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity, signaling plans to broaden its AI-integrations portfolio over time.
Update, January 12: Apple and Google issued a joint statement confirming the partnership and its intended impact on future Apple Intelligence features.
