HBO Ramps Up Security and Social Media Training for Harry Potter TV Series After Paapa Essiedu Death Threats
Casey Bloys, the CEO overseeing HBO’s content strategy, has revealed that the upcoming Harry Potter TV adaptation required both a dedicated security team and social media training for the cast and crew. The precautions followed pleas and threats directed at Paapa Essiedu, who is set to portray Severus Snape in the new series.
The trailer dropped on March 25 on HBO Max’s YouTube channel, and fans quickly drew comparisons to the original film franchise. Reactions have been polarized, with some viewers praising the new cast while others issued pointed criticisms that spilled onto social media.
Essiedu has publicly spoken about the harassment he faced online, including death threats that appeared in Instagram comments. He has said the abuse, while distressing, has fueled his approach to the role.
In a closer look at the behind-the-scenes work, Bloys spoke with Variety on March 24 about anticipating backlash against the cast of high-profile IP projects. “On any kind of big IP shows,” he noted, “where you’ve got, you know, passionate fans, people with a lot of opinions, it can get scary in places.” He added that the production “anticipated it and tried to have training,” including best practices for managing social media and a serious security presence on set.
Bloys was reluctant to share further specifics about the production, including the status of casting for a certain famous villain. Essiedu has also mentioned lighter moments from the shoot, including a broom accident that briefly disrupted filming.
