Jamie Dornan Cast as Aragorn in The Hunt for Gollum, Joins Kate Winslet and Leo Woodall
Warner Bros. revealed during CinemaCon that Jamie Dornan has been cast as Aragorn (Strider) in The Hunt for Gollum, a film positioned in the timeline between The Hobbit and the events of Peter Jackson’s LOTR trilogy. Dornan’s Aragorn is described as heading out on a critical mission to locate Gollum before the creature can warn Sauron that Bilbo Baggins possesses the One Ring.
Previously, Andy Serkis had suggested the role would be recast, fueling fan chatter about who might don Aragorn’s mantle. While Leo Woodall had been a frequent name in those rumors, Warner Bros. confirmed Dornan as the new Ranger. Woodall has since joined the cast in a different role: Halvard, a Dúnedain ranger who accompanies Strider on the dangerous pursuit.
In addition to Dornan, the film’s ensemble includes Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood reprising Gandalf and Frodo, though the scope of their roles remains to be seen. Kate Winslet appears as Marigol, and Lee Pace returns as the Elven King Thranduil from The Hobbit.
Andy Serkis remains tied to the project, once again portraying Gollum, and it’s unclear how much of Smeagol we’ll see before the Ring’s corrupting influence takes hold. The cast also features Woodall as Halvard, reinforcing the idea that this story centers on the perilous hunt led by Strider.
With the CinemaCon reveal, fans now have a clearer read on the film’s direction, though many questions about plot specifics and release timing are still to come. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing chapter of Middle-earth, and for other big-ticket films slated for 2026.
